Ripped
Off
Yesterday we ran an article about the Cone
of Silence, written to us exclusively by the Cone's owner, James
Neill. So imagine my surprise when I saw the exact
same article (with a different title and picture) at the Sail-World
site. I immediately asked James if he had sent the article to Sail-World
and his reply was "No."
Did we here at SA give Sail-World permission to use the piece that
we published? No - they didn't even bother to ask. Instead they simply
lifted it from our site, not even giving credit to where they got
it from.
Rob Kothe, the editor at
Sail-World apparently thinks that is okay. Hey Kothe, not only have
we taken enough of your bullshit innuendo about how we are a "forum"
website only, but you have now completely pissed us off to absolutely
no end . We haven't put in this much work to create SA, trademarked
and copyrighted our property, only to have people blatantly disregard
the most basic aspects of fairness.
You may think it okay to take copyrighted material, but we can assure
you our attorney does not. Something tells us our readers don't think
so either.

Defending
our Turf
As most of you know, we printed an article
that was sent to us and only to us, by the owner of The Cone of Silence.
A day later, Sail-World took the article directly from our site, without
permission, and published it on their site. When we create content
on our site, that content, which is copyrighted, is then the property
of Sailing Anarchy, and cannot be taken nor used without permission.
We demanded that the piece be removed from their site, and they refused,
offering up that "stories routinely do the rounds." Apparently
lifting a story from another site is "routinely doing the rounds."
Interesting, that.
SW then, still denying that they had done anything wrong, went to
the Cone owner - who never sent it to them in the first place - and
asked if they could publish the article. The owner said yes, but the
damage has already been done, and the published article by Sail-World
is the one they took from our site. They took copyrighted property
from us, denied any wrong doing, then attempted to back door their
lifting our property by going to the Cone for "permission."
We at Sailing Anarchy are not going to just allow someone to knowingly
and willingly take our material from us. We are pursuing our legal
options and whether or not we have recourse, we have made it clear
that we are simply trying to defend our turf.

Resolution
The mutt that lifted our copyrighted
Cone of Silence article (still denying any wrong doing) and put it
on his site, has finally backed down and taken it off his site. We
feel some vindication for correcting a clear wrong, and felt it by
all means necessary to have made it so. Sometimes (okay, all the time)
your Faithful Ed acts and reacts quickly, sometimes (okay, always)
without the proper thought processes in place. But above all I know
we were right about having been wronged, and feel that a bit of justice
has been served. For those curious, our relationship with the owner
of The Cone remains strong, and as for the other bloke, it is safe
to say that I won't be sending him an x-mas card this year. Perhaps
you can now see why I have such utter disdain for the hacks in this
business.
As always, we'll again move forward, this time with the message delivered
that it is best not to fuck with SA!
