The Big Boys

You'd think with our recent Transpac articles, that we're a bit queer for this race, and maybe we are. But what's most interesting this go around, are the new boats generated for this race. We've got eight Transpacs between the staff members here, so yeah we think it is a pretty cool race. Our friend Jim Pugh has been kind enough to provide us with some JPEG's of their latest efforts to capture first to finish honors. Pegasus, owned by Philippe Kahn (see our interview with Philippe in the Archive section), and Chance owned by Bob McNulty, are derivations of the hugely successful Pyewacket theme. While we do know there are differences between the boats, we don't know what they all are (Jim wouldn't tell us!). But here is what we do know: Both the new boats were built off the same plug at one of the top yards (McConaghy in Australia), they carry around a bunch of internal ballast (something like 8,000 pounds!) in order to meet the IMS speed limit, and both boats are masthead rigs. Pegasus, has opted for North 3DL Sails on a Southern Spar, and McNulty has chosen the latest Quantum Fusion Carbon from Quantum on a Hall spar, both of which are carbon.. Both boats will clearly have their work cut out to topple the exquisite program that Roy Disney and Robbie Haines have put together on Pyewacket. But like any long distance race, there are so many variables that the fastest may not get to Honolulu first.
