Not Fade Away

Here's the latest about Chris Sayer from Brett Bakewell-White. -Ed

Dear Sayer Supporters,

Chris is currently battling to catch up after his delayed start, and whilst it has been rather frustrating watching him out of touch with the leaders, it does appear that he is beginning to make inroads into their lead. There has been considerable controversy surrounding Chris and his “Pirate” entry, and in particular much criticism of the e-mail campaign by you, his supporters, in trying to encourage the organizers to give him an official place in the race. It may be said by some that that campaign failed, but I would suggest to you that ultimately it has given Chris a very high profile internationally. He is now currently a ‘name’ in world yachting, he has received accolades for his attitude and his determination, and for his gracious words towards his fellow competitors.

Ultimately this lift in profile will make it far easier for Chris to obtain support for future campaigns – hopefully a fully funded Open 60, flying the NZ flag.

I spoke to Chris after the first leg and he was very happy, and very positive. His reception in Lancerote was very welcoming and the Classe Mini had arranged for a berth for “Wildcard” and the other competitors were friendly and helpful. All were very interested in the boat and he said it was close to a queue, with a constant stream of people crawling over and through the boat. So whilst Chris will not appear in the official results, his performance to date has been acknowledged.

An illustration of the international acknowledgement of Chris’ performance is shown below. Seahorse magazine is accepted as ‘the’ yacht racing magazine worldwide and you will see below that they have nominated Chris as one of two possible candidates for Sailor of the Month in their upcoming issue, and they are offering everybody the opportunity to vote. I would ask that you all show your support, once again, by going to the site and voting for Chris (tell your friends as well!) You do not have to identify yourself by name or e-mail (it is optional) Add your comments if you wish. - NOTE: Sometimes the VOTE button does not appear to work, but if you click on the SEND COMMENTS button the vote is registered.

When you go to vote, note also the second headline on the cover of the next edition “Merde – Sayer leads McKee in MiniTransat”

Thanks everyone, keep following Chris’ progress on our website.

Regards,

Brett Bakewell-White
