Race Report

29er Worlds

I am now at Weymouth for the 29er Worlds. Racing starts in 2 days and now everyone is getting their boats measured and sorted out. It is pretty hectic with having over 100 29ers and 80 49ers trying to fit in a pretty tight area. We are camping with the Finnish sailing team in the back of the parking lot. They are nice people and I understand them somewhat after living this past year in Finland. The facility is really cool and it is a good place for Olympic sailing in 2012. There is a huge bay surrounded by breakwaters. The water is really flat but there is no wind after this thunderstorm passed over last night. The sailing center is sort of in the middle of nowhere and because we don't have a car we have been hitch hiking to the local market. It has been so hot and dry here lately which is the opposite of what I thought England would be like but it was nice this morning to wake up to rain and wind and gray skies. All in all the trip here has been wonderful with great weather all around. We are now heading out to go train with the Finns. Thanks again for all the support and look forward for more reports.

Day 1 29er Worlds. The weather is starting to clear now as the wind is picking up. It is a steady 12 knots. The first practice race started today and unfortunately I was not able to race due to a bad ear infection. I got some antibiotics from the local hospital and they said not to go in the water.Screw that - nothing short of death is stopping me from racing here. Although I can't hear out of my right ear I think I will be okay. The rest of the British boats finished measuring and are now out training. The weather is very strange here in Weymouth, it is either really cold and windy or really hot and no wind, but never anything nice in between. Well hopefully I will regain hearing in my ear before the first races tomorrow.

Aloha,
Ian Andrewes
