Thirty-two high school sailors came to Indian Harbor Yacht Club, Greenwich CT over the weekend to race Lasers in the national high school single-handed championship (Cressy Trophy). Saturday morning, sailors were greeted by a 30+ knot sou’easterly and dramatic seas necessitating a shoreside postponed. With Sunday’s forecast promising even more wind, the outlook for getting the regatta in was bleak. Fortunately around 1:30 a window of opportunity presented itself and the group was sent out where three good races were sailed under “changeable” conditions which ranged from 10-22 knots. A fourth race was attempted but the arrival of the new frontal system brought with it new 30+ knot breezes resulting in numerous capsizes and abandonment. In an attempt to squeeze in another race or two Sunday’s first race was moved up to 0830. The hoped for easing of the breeze never materialized as 35 knot gusts were recorded all morning. Ultimately racing was canceled with the results from Saturday sufficient to constitute a regatta.

Winner the full rig division was Blake Warner of Calvary Chapel School, Newport Beach CA with Caleb Paine (Point Loma High School) and Cam Cullman (Hotchkiss School) second and third. The Radial fleet was won by Joe Morris of Severn School followed by Brendan Faria (Providence Country Day) and Phillip Crain (St. John’s School).
