Carnage! Just under 40 cats, skiffs, and skiffish boats clashed at Nepean Sailing Club in the 2006 bitHeads Ottawa Skiff Grand Prix this past weekend in Ottawa, Canada. The event featured some of the coolest boats on the planet, with some of the hottest competition in Eastern North America, including the designers and builders of three of the included classes, and several past world champs. 29ers, Vectors, I14s, 49ers, ICs, Laser 5000s, Tornados, various Hobie cat classes came together to compete in the celebration of speed and swimming. Various classes were combined over three “fleets” to generate more congestion and mayhem with short 30-45 sprint races causing some fantastic spills, much to the joy of the spectators. Many countries were represented as well, including Canada, Cuba, Great Britain, USA, and Australia over the two day event. In only it’s’ third year, this has become a must do for anyone interested in high performance racing in Eastern N.A. While nursing their wounds, the skiffies managed to stay true to their name, consuming the entire rum and favored local beer dry in the 1800 member sailing club’s bar in parties that went well into the early hours of the morning.
