0500 UTC this morning, the maxi-trimaran Groupama 3 was under 300 miles
from the finishing line at San Salvador and looks set to beat the Discovery
Route record, set by Steve Fossett, on his maxi-catamaran PlayStation.Groupama 3 has been averaging around 30 knots for the last 24 hours and is expected to arrive between 2000 and 2100 UTC this evening, though the speed could drop as the boat gets in the lee of the Turks et Caïcos and other islands. The crew won't be stopping for a rest, in San Salvador, the trimaran will cross the line and change course for Miami, where it will go on standby for an attempt at Fossett's Miami to New York record, followed by the transatlantic record held by Bruno Peyron, on Orange II.
