Bigger and Badder

We have a little sniff test for designers around here. It's real simple: draw interesting boats, have a sense of humor, and don't shove me in the water. It's funny how many get it and conversely, how few don't. Brett Bakewell-White comes from the former group. He's always been a refreshingly forthright guy, something we admire and find it missing in a few others. As such, we like to give play to guys like that and here's what Brett had to say about his brand new maxi design:

Here are the first shots of ZANA on her keel on Wellington’s waterfront. Our new weapon!

At 30m LOA “Zana” is New Zealand’s largest offshore race boat and the first time since the seventies that a resident New Zealander has owned a full on maxi. Designed to the IRC rule to sit at the maximum rating allowed for entry into the Sydney to Hobart Race, the yacht has two modes. A heavy bulb for the rating mode, and then a second ‘light’ bulb in conjunction with water ballast and big ‘hooray’ chutes in speed mode.

The yacht has been beautifully constructed in carbon/nomex by the team at the Wellington yard of Hakes Marine. The rig is by Southern and sails by Doyle New Zealand in carbon D4.

Will get you some sailing pictures some time next week.

Regards,

Brett Bakewell-White, B.Arch., ARINA, SNAME.
