Mali 33 Plenty of Reasons to Smile Just like all of you, we get excited about some boats more than others. We all find that "thing" that just floats our boat. Since we all dig race boats, and since most of you have little use for any amenities, and since most also think that boats are too expensive, I have to wonder if this boat isn't almost the ultimate solution to a lot of questions. The boat is the Mali 33. It is designed by Giovanni Ceccarelli and built by Owanda in Italy. Owanda specializes in one-off and series-built high-tech racers and fast cruisers up to 100' LOA. They also build carbon spars with an in-house design team able to customize any carbon spar needs.
The Mali 33 is built with the hull and deck on female molds with wet preg of SP system epoxy (Ampreg 22), multiaxial E-Glass and PVC core all vacuum bagged and post-cured. Internal structures are of Epoxy/E-glass and carbon with two bulkheads made of PVC sandwich. Carbon mast with three sets of spreaders (also carbon) swept back 20°. The boom is an elliptical shape also carbon as well as the sprit (retractable) and spinnaker pole. One of the first things we said to these guys when we saw the drawings of the boat was to lower the wheel, and they are not only doing just that, but also considering offering a tiller option. For full specs check out the PDF file And here comes the perhaps the best part. You can get a Mali 33 delivered on the East Coast, with NORTH 3DL Main and jib and Nylon Asymmetrical kite for $64,700. It seems like an incredible price given where other similar boats are priced. We cannot speak about the ultimate quality or performance of the boat, but it certainly looks promising.
