New School........
This
is the new Beau Geste - the first TP52 by Farr Yacht Design on the way
to keel mounting and rig stepping. We'll have sailing pics next week.
A lot of
man power was used to move the still over-weightMargaritaville
behind the building. This is where all the Secret Shit
happens.

........Old School
Proving
that indeed there is more than one way to skin a cat, the venerable IOR
Farr 50 "Margartiville" is attempting to turn a sow's ear into
a silk purse. Margi is the former "Springbok" which went on
to became "Corum". The boat was designed and built (Cookson)
in 1989, and was part of the winning 1991 Admirals Cup team. The boat
has won a whole lot of races here in So Cal under it's current owner,
but they can see the writing on the wall, so they are turning this old
IOR warhorse into a modern TP 52! How, you ask? The "new" boat
will be all new from the sheer line down. They are using the Andrews TP
52 mold at Dencho and Andrews is designing a new keel and changing the
hull shape at the sheer slightly.
It
will use the old rig, which is as tall as a TP52's rig except it will
have runners and overlapping jibs. They are also putting in the out-board
chainplates in the event they ultimately decide to change rigs and conform
to the class rule. Here are some shots of the project. Now this one will
be fun to follow!

We've
been sporadically following the progress of the conversion of Margaritaville,
the old Farr IOR 50 into the "new" Andrews Transpac 52. The
boys cleverly refer to the "new" boat as Margaritaville 1.5,
given that they are using the old deck and rig and god knows what else.
Good guys with a fun program, they'll have a blast with the boat and we
hope they surprise some people with their results. We'll try to get out
for a spin someday soon. Here's the report from TimO. - Ed.
