Well Done

Battling the ocean by yourself is a feat, setting a record in the process is even more so. Tony Gooch did both, and although not in the latest whiz-bang boat, a non-stop solo circumnavigation is a significant accomplishment nonetheless. Mike Beattie filed this report for us. -The Ed

Tony Gooch has just set another World Record, an incredible trip around the world, this one non-stop from Victoria B.C back to Victoria. Another thing that makes this trip even more special. He was planning to be back by his 64th birthday, and he did it.

The most recent report had him fighting adverse currents and strong headwinds just to cover 80 miles or so. He was at 22:00 March 24th, 19 miles from Race Rocks, which is 12 miles from finish. Well the adverse current and light wind held up his finish until 10:57 March 25th in the morning. One Hundred Seventy Eight Days.

This trip had no major sponsor mentioned, not to say he didn’t have major support from his wife Coryn, who he says was his driving force, the one who made it all possible and kept the home fires burning.

His last comments, "It was hard, always sailing. The endurance is easier for an old guy."

A great story and a great accomplishment. For more information go to his web site www.taonui.com
