This Guy and His Boat

OK, I'm stepping up to beat the drums for not only Bruce but the whole Ocean Planet team.

Ocean Planet is truly an American endeavor in all but one respect. The boat is innovative. The team is organized and determined. The leader is defiant toward defeat. The one very un-American aspect of the Ocean Planet project is they are not a wealthy entry.

Above I wrote, the "whole Ocean Planet team". It goes beyond one guy chasing a dream. There are countless volunteers, employees, sponsors, family and loved ones all devoted to this multi-year endeavor. From my first hand experience, I was completely blown away with the amount of passion and energy put forth for this guy and his boat. The team spirit has graduated beyond American shores. From what I can tell, his support network stretched throughout the English spoken world.

OK, let's cover the facts. The economy is not what it was 2 years ago. Every non-profit is working the, "Tis the season to give". There are many organizations well worth giving to. On the flip side, Bruce is one of us. He's a sailor. He's always been a regular on the Sailing Anarchy forum. Some of us are living vicariously through him. How many of us would love to leave our cubicles, offices or work stations to jump on a boat and race for several months. Most of us won't, one of us had the balls to chase the dream. When you put together your annual charity budget, keep the guy and his boat in mind.
