Rig with jumper struts

Rig without jumper struts

Ben and I took your opening ideas and went for a fast, sport boat type capable of doing a Transpac. We were constantly reminded of the cost issue. We did not "study" the competition but relied on our ongoing general and specific awareness of these types.

The hull shape is fine forward and a bit fat aft in order to use crew weight to advantage and endow the boat with reasonable form stability. We did not want excessive flair anywhere. Of course the boat will work best sailed at modest angles of heel. There is a hint of deadrise aft in the arced sections as I don't like dead flat runs. We also thought that a shape that would lend itself to water ballast was probably in order for future developement options.

The rig relies upon a carbon spar. It's expensive but key to making this dinghy type rig work. We may need more sweep on the spreaders in order to maintain headstay tension when the main is eased. Cost considerations preclude an adjustable headstay.

The articlating bowsprit was chosen in order to allow the boat to sail lower. Sailing lower efficiently is a lot like sailing higher. If you can eliminate jibes while maintaining boat speed you eliminate room for error and increase tactical options. ICON has proven this.

Freeboard is 39" at the bow. Freeboard is weight. Weight is materials and materials are money.

Well, does it look like you thought it would? Like most creative designers, Bob put his signature all over it. My first impression is that I like it. In the meantime,
How do I get one?
